Stargazing in the Tankwa Karoo is one of the most magical experiences South Africa has to offer.

Thanks to its remote location, crystal-clear desert skies, and minimal light pollution, the region is a top destination for astrophotographers, amateur astronomers, and casual stargazers alike.

With no city lights for hundreds of kilometers, the Tankwa Karoo offers a breathtaking window into the universe.

Tips for Stargazing in Tankwa

Best time to visit:

New moon periods (for darkest skies)
Autumn & Spring offer mild temperatures and long nights (March–May, August–October)

Bring your own gear:

Telescopes, binoculars, tripods, red torches, and star maps/apps like SkySafari or Stellarium.

Photography tips:
Use a DSLR or mirrorless camera with a wide-angle lens
Long exposure (20–30s), high ISO (1600–3200), low aperture (f/2.8 or lower)
Use a sturdy tripod and remote shutter

Dress warmly:
Nights can get very cold, even in summer.
